A big part of my fishing experience is confidence. I actually out fish most of my friends most days because I am very comfortable with the baits I use for whatever species I am fishing, such as Largemouth bass. I just love using confidence baits and for me the 5″ Senko Worms is one of those baits.

During the day my fishing friends are deciding what bait to use while I am catching fish. For me it’s simple, I put on my confidence bait for the species we are fishing and I’m good to go, no messing around.

The Setup I Use For The 5″ Senko Worms is Called The Texas Rig

The setup I use for the 5″ Senko Worm is really fast once you get the hang of it. Most of the time I have just one setup but I do have a second setup I sometimes use for smallmouth bass. But first my regular setup.

Step One: Get the right hooks, which are off-set worm hooks. For my 5″ Senko worms I use a 3.0 offset hook which works fine for me. I have been contemplating going with a slightly longer offset hook, just because the chain pickerel tend to come up a bit short and bite off half the worm.

Note: If you fish toothy critters? My advice is for you to put a steel leader on your line to stop them cutting your line too often.

Now that you’ve got an offset hook you can start rigging the worm. The goal here is to get that 5″ Senko worm on the hook straight. If the worm is bent it doesn’t track through the water naturally so you won’t attract as many fish. Actually they may even laugh at your setup, so get it right.

Getting The Worm on The Offset Hook

1. The front of your Senko worm has a flat end while the tail end is tapered. Hold the Senko or plastic worm so you can put the point of the hook in the front of the worm.
2. So you know how deep to put the offset hook into your Senko you can put the worm along side the hook and you will see that it’s about a half inch. That’s as far as you want to put the hook point into the worm before poking it through the side of the worm.
3. You will notice a groove in the worm, that’s where the hook point should be when you are done. I don’t always use that groove and just hook into the worm but I lose a lot more worms to shredding doing that. It’s your choice.
4. Hold the worm between your thumb and forefinger with the slot facing the palm of your hand.
5. Now push the hook point through the nose of the worm, the flat end, about a half inch and bring it out of the worm, away from your palm.
6. Bring the worm up the hook to the offset, then twist the worm a bit so that it slides on to the offest at the top of the hook. The worm should hang straight down and the slot on the worm should be on the opposite site from where the hook point is. That will allow you to put the hook through the worm and allow it to rest, weedless, in the groove.
7. You will find that you need to bend the worm up a little so that it’s got a little slack before sticking the hook through the worm and into the slot. This may take a few tries, so do your practising at home where there’s no pressure.
8. Now the hook should be through the worm and the point should be in the groove so that when a fish smacks it the hook gets him and you can start screaming.
