Offset Worm Hook

Image via Wikipedia

A big part of my fishing experience is confidence. I actually out fish most of my friends most days because I am very comfortable with the baits I use for whatever species I am fishing, such as Largemouth bass. I just love using confidence baits and for me the 5″ Senko Worms is one of those baits.

During the day my fishing friends are deciding what bait to use while I am catching fish. For me it’s simple, I put on my confidence bait for the species we are fishing and I’m good to go, no messing around.

The Setup I Use For The 5″ Senko Worms is Called The Texas Rig

The setup I use for the 5″ Senko Worm is really fast once you get the hang of it. Most of the time I have just one setup but I do have a second setup I sometimes use for smallmouth bass. But first my regular setup.

Step One: Get the right hooks, which are off-set worm hooks. For my 5″ Senko worms I use a 3.0 offset hook which works fine for me. I have been contemplating going with a slightly longer offset hook, just because the chain pickerel tend to come up a bit short and bite off half the worm.

Note: If you fish toothy critters? My advice is for you to put a steel leader on your line to stop them cutting your line too often.

Now that you’ve got an offset hook you can start rigging the worm. The goal here is to get that 5″ Senko worm on the hook straight. If the worm is bent it doesn’t track through the water naturally so you won’t attract as many fish. Actually they may even laugh at your setup, so get it right.

Getting The Worm on The Offset Hook

  1. The front of your Senko worm has a flat end while the tail end is tapered. Hold the Senko or plastic worm so you can put the point of the hook in the front of the worm.
  2. So you know how deep to put the offset hook into your Senko you can put the worm along side the hook and you will see that it’s about a half inch. That’s as far as you want to put the hook point into the worm before poking it through the side of the worm.
  3. You will notice a groove in the worm, that’s where the hook point should be when you are done. I don’t always use that groove and just hook into the worm but I lose a lot more worms to shredding doing that. It’s your choice.
  4. Hold the worm between your thumb and forefinger with the slot facing the palm of your hand.
  5. Now push the hook point through the nose of the worm, the flat end, about a half inch and bring it out of the worm, away from your palm.
  6. Bring the worm up the hook to the offset, then twist the worm a bit so that it slides on to the offest at the top of the hook. The worm should hang straight down and the slot on the worm should be on the opposite site from where the hook point is. That will allow you to put the hook through the worm and allow it to rest, weedless, in the groove.
  7. You will find that you need to bend the worm up a little so that it’s got a little slack before sticking the hook through the worm and into the slot. This may take a few tries, so do your practising at home where there’s no pressure.
  8. Now the hook should be through the worm and the point should be in the groove so that when a fish smacks it the hook gets him and you can start screaming.

Fishing is so much more fun when you have a confidence bait like the 5″ Senko Worm and for that confidence to get strong one needs to learn how to rig the bait for best performance. I am sure that in 10 minutes of practice you will be a pro.

Information on Atlantic Salmon

Salmon and sea trout

Salmo Salar is perhaps one of the least recognized names, but one of the best known fish in the Northern Atlantic. More commonly known as the Atlantic Salmon it is also known as Black Salmon and Sebago Salmon. They can be found in waters ranging from Iceland to Greenland, Quebec to the Connecticut River, and parts of Portugal to the Arctic Circle.  While some population of salmon are primarily freshwater, it is not unusual for them to migrate from sea to freshwater for spawning.  It is not unusual for Atlantic Salmon to spawn several times before they die.

Some anglers have confused Atlantic Salmon with brown trout. While they may be mistaken for them, in reality they are not the same size or the same colour.  In fact, salmon in saltwater typically appear silver and have black marks on their backs that resemble an X shaped pattern.  In freshwater, they take on a deep bronze colour which may resemble a brown trout, but the markings are different. While a brown trout develops red spots along the entire length of their bodies, Atlantic Salmon generally only develop these spots around their heads.

Anglers enjoy a variety of baits and fishing methods when trying to land the Atlantic salmon and many a beginner angler has learned the hard way they need to keep control of their drag – otherwise this aggressive fish could pull all of the line from your reel.  Make sure you are using a good strong line and that you have developed your knot perfectly to avoid losing the Atlantic salmon.  Bait that is appropriate can be flies, lures or plugs, but more anglers find that prawns, crustaceans, egg sacks and worms are even better as the Atlantic salmon are naturally drawn to their movements.

Whether it is saltwater or freshwater, anglers can find Atlantic Salmon depending on when they are spawning. Remember that saltwater fishing brings out the fight in this fish and you will require a stronger line and rod.  These fish fight far harder than you might expect for their size, especially in saltwater.  In general, it is best to try to land the Atlantic Salmon as they are travelling to freshwater areas for spawning. Since they die shortly after being spawned out, you could find yourself with a fish that dies shortly after you’ve landed him.

Whether it is for food or for recreation, this fish remains one of the most sought after game fish.  They are highly prized for both recreation and for faring.  Because they have a unique ability to fight beyond what would be expected for their size, they are a prized recreational fish.  Seafood restaurants value Atlantic salmon for the versatility they offer in a variety of dishes.  Because the Atlantic salmon population is on the decrease, steps have been taken to preserve the supplies. Most restaurant salmon is farm raised and in general, Atlantic salmon are on catch and release programs in most waterways to preserve them.

When you are getting prepared for a saltwater fishing adventure, having the proper equipment is essential. Some of the most popular products on the market include okuma fishing reel and van staal reel.

Fish Tips For Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing for Salmon on Sandy Creek, NY

There are thousands of bait anglers, who are excellent sportsmen, but the fly fisherman can become better conservation from the beginning.Fly fishing is not only one of the fastest growing sports; it is one of the best forms of conserving natural resources as well as providing recreation.Fly fishing is, very simple when three things are right: you must have a good rod; you must have the right line to match the rod; and you must learn correct casting mode.People who wish to know some tips on fly fishing, here is a list of pointers that could help anglers harness their fly fishing skills:

1. Material of a fly rod

For one of moderate means, and especially for the beginners, hollow glass is advised through it will require less care than bamboo and will not take on a bend if improperly stored.

2. Fly line

Your fly casting skill will not be good with a mismatched fly rod and line. About 99 times in 100, the troubled fly caster has a line much too light to bring out the action of the rod.

Important to notice that on any given rod, the fly fisherman use the same size line for anything from small trout and bluegills up to the largest sea fish.

In finding your size line, anglers should get a C level, an HCH double – taper, or a GBF three – diameter. This choice is based on the fact that a high percentage of fly rods bought now are hollow glass, again that a great majority of these work best with lines of those sizes, almost regardless of lengths or weights.

3. Correct casting technique

In casting, it is important to get about 20 feet of line out front. Anglers should always cast a straight line. Avoid jerky movements in order to do so.

The angler should relaxed because taunt muscles will ruin his casting.

All together, there should be no reason why you should not learn the fundamental principles just as easily as those who now enjoy fly fishing.

Universal, the best and surest way to learn to cast successfully is to spend a day on the stream with some fisherman who is a competent caster.

Lessons learned on the stream are the best tip you can achieve anywhere for learning fly fishing.

The Necessity Of Saltwater Fishing Lures

Spoon-bait, spinner. Fishing equipment

Do you like fishing? Do you relax and get detached from mundane concerns when on a fishing expedition? If so, for both fresh and saltwater fishing, you should always be prepared to do it properly in order to also catch fish.

This material aims at briefly describing the use of saltwater fishing lures and the ways to properly select them. The purpose of the lures is to resemble prey for the fish you intend to catch. All types of fishing lures, and there are many of them, are designed to look like dying fish and fast moving fish, thus attracting the predators – your own prey.

Therefore, when you go on your saltwater fishing trips you probably want to have the best saltwater fishing lures and tackles in general. The lures selection could easily become a real challenge. Yet, solutions do exist, there are many models and lots of info on each of them to help. The fishing location, the species you are after, the time of the year when you go fishing, as well as personal preference influence the choice of the right tools.

Saltwater fishing lures differ depending on the species you try to catch; the minolure is reliable in fishing for trout, Millies Bucktail is recommended for bonefish, mackerel is easily caught by using diamond shaped, gold or silver spoons but for the surface king mackerel it is better to use a cedar plug. Jiggs, poppers and lures imitating bait fish work pretty well in the case of bass .

From the wide range of saltwater fishing lures available on the market you can choose the spoons which, in spite of being simplistic, are very effective and easy to use, and quite cheap. Spinners consisting of a blade placed on a spindle that rotates when reeled in or let out on the water thus imitating the scales and movement of bait fish make one other good choice. Surface lures, suspending plugs, floating drivers and sinking plugs are also popular among saltwater fishermen.

The only relevant conclusion is that you need equipment, and fishing as a leisure activity would lose part of its charm if you had to improvise too much. If you want the best results to come out of the expedition also consider buying the most suitable saltwater fishing lures. After reading this article, you will be curious to get another helpful information on other interesting topics like walkie talkie and walkie talkie watch to give you more knowledge.

Today’s fishing rods have incorporated modern features that are not typical of the more primitive cane pole. Modern fishing rods contain reels, which aid in the retrieval of fish caught in its bait.

A much-sophisticated feature is the spinning rod where the entire shaft of the rod except the handle can move around on its axis to allow flexibility when fish caught on snare bait struggles through the water.

Like the classic cane fishing rods, the fishing gadget is thick at the handle (bottom) and is tapered and thinner at the tip. This very basic design allows handling stability and flexible movement of the entire length of the shaft.

Types of Fishing Rods and Specifications

A typical fishing rod measures 6 and 16 feet (2 and 5 m) and vary in capability to tolerate strain in fishing activity. The length has a lot to do with withstanding force exerted by the fish to the pole and determines for the most part the performance of rods used for angling.

Cane Poles

Cane poles are one of the smallest and less sophisticated gadgets in fishing. It is usually made of bamboo or other flexible wood material with the most basic fly line attached to it.

Unlike other more sophisticated fishing rods, cane poles do not usually contain reels or its equivalent to be used for reeling in or retrieving fish caught on bait. This very same action is known as angling.

Spinning Rods

These types of rods are the most popular today. They can be used either for heavyweight or lightweight fish although they were proven best for trout, walleye and bass fish. They vary in measurements from 5 and 7 feet (1.5 and 2.5 m).

Spinning poles are commonly used in bass fishing competition accounting for their flexibility and tolerance to stress. They accommodate bigger and tougher fly lines and stabilize them to avoid line tangles during uncoiling of float lines.

Jigging Rods

These rods are best for heavy lures and baits especially when reaching around 180 to 200 feet under the ocean’s surface. They are made of fine, solid materials which accounts to their heaviness. The use of jigging rods is specifically due to alternating currents during the fishing activity.

Some oceans have erratic undersea current.  That is why the bait and fly lines should be kept in place. Lures are also disturbed and cause confusion among fish if the lines are not long and heavy enough to withstand and tolerate water currents under the sea.

These rods are best for target fishes usually found dwelling at the bottom of the sea such as halibut and cods.

The Sage Xi2 Saltwater Fly Rod

Saltwater fly fishing gear is heavier than freshwater fly fishing gear for two main reasons. Firstly, saltwater fish species are generally larger than freshwater fish species, and you will need stronger rods, reels and lines to catch these fish species. Secondly, saltwater fly fishing requires longer casting with larger flies, and normally there is some wind to deal with. You cannot cast very far in windy conditions with a light fly rod using a light fly line. The saltwater fly rod, saltwater fly reel and saltwater fly line make up the essential saltwater fly fishing gear you will need for saltwater fly fishing.

Saltwater Fly Rod

Your most important item of saltwater fly fishing gear is the saltwater fly rod. A 3 weight to 7 weight fly rod is normally used for freshwater fly fishing. For saltwater fly fishing, the lightest fly rod usually used is a 7-weight rod. A 16-weight fly rod is the heaviest rod that can be used for saltwater fly fishing. The saltwater fish species that you are trying to catch determine the weight of your saltwater fly rod. To catch sailfish such as Marlin you might use a 13-weight rod, but then use a 8-weight rod to catch Bonefish. For saltwater fly fishing, look to buy a specialized saltwater fly rod, specifically designed for saltwater fly fishing.

A good saltwater fly rod will have a fast action, and will generally be quite stiff. A fast action rod allows you to cast further in windy conditions and makes it easier to land larger saltwater fish species. The guides for a saltwater fly rod should be made of stainless steel or another metal that won’t rust. Because of the additional punishment of saltwater fly fishing, the guides should be extra strong on s saltwater fly rod. A good saltwater fly rod will have a padded fighting butt which will provide more comfort when fishing for extended periods of time. The saltwater fly rod that is rated as one of the best all-around saltwater fly rods is the excellent Sage Xi2 saltwater fly rod.

Saltwater Fly Reel

A saltwater fly reel is an essential item of saltwater fly fishing gear, and is more important for saltwater fly fishing than for freshwater fly fishing. A saltwater fly reel needs to be better quality than a freshwater fly reel. It is important that you buy a saltwater fly reel made of components that are saltwater resistant, so the reel will not rust. It is also important that the saltwater fly reel has a very good drag system and sufficient line capacity for your backing, fly line, and your leader. As saltwater fish species normally run further with your line once caught, 100 to 300 yards of backing is normal.

Saltwater Fly Line

The saltwater fly line most commonly used for saltwater fly fishing is a floating line, which is used to catch fish near the water’s surface. A fly line that sinks slowly, called an intermediate line is sometimes used. A sinking line or a sink-tip line can also be used to catch fish at deeper levels. A weight forward line is normally preferred for saltwater fly fishing in order to be able to cast longer distances in strong winds. The fly line weight used normally matches the fly rod weight, but sometimes a slightly heavier line weight is used, especially in windy conditions.

Effective Bass Fishing Lures

Bass fishing

Fishing is one of the most relaxing hobbies people practice. The thrill of catching fish is real and infectious and the possibility to cook your own meal on it is even more attractive. If you also want to benefit from the wonderful taste of the fish you caught, then you must be well prepared for the activity. To give a good example here would be to stress out the importance of fishing lures as part of the tackle. Let’s take bass fishing lures and see what specifics they have that will make better bass fishing.

Bass fishing lures must be chosen carefully as there are many types, specialized for the various conditions of bass fishing: the time, the place and the type of fishing, as well as the type of bass you are after. The most popular bass fishing lures include vibrating lures, tube baits, crank baits, spinners, rubber worms, poppers and several others.

If you do not like working with real worms in particular, you can choose rubber worms that work just as well. This kind of bass fishing lures are designed to descend slowly towards deeper waters, fooling fish to believe they are real prey. On the other hand, many fishermen consider jigs to be the most useful and proper when bass fishing in somewhat murky waters or when fishing at night. The success of jigs comes from the fact that they look like living fish.

Other two bass fishing lures to discuss are the crank and spinner baits. Crank lures or baits imitate injured or weak fish and are used both in surface and deep fishing. The cranking noise added to these lures attracts the bass as well. Spinners on the other hand rely on the efficiency of movement. Water stirring is the main property of spinners, and their use as bass fishing lures is not restricted to one season alone.

Poppers represent a bass fishing lures model that is very similar to cranks, but they normally work well in summertime. Now, if you go fishing for small-mouth bass, some special lures like grubs would be more suitable. Besides small-mouth bass fishing, grubs can also be useful for fishing in clear deep waters.

Getting A Grip On Fishing Lures

The evolution of fishing gear as well as the popularity of the bass fishing industry brought about the development of a huge variety of fishing lures, each specifically designed for certain types of fish.

There are many types and classes of lures and they all work best for a certain type of fish. Many only work for specific types but some cover a wide range of species of fish.

Below are some of the typical lures used for fishing.

Light Standard Casting Lures

For Standard casting lures, they are mostly able to attract a wide range of fish varieties from albacore, bluefish, bonita, oho and crappies. These lures are also excellent for certain species of bass and they work best when moved over the water at a low to medium speed. They pass through water with undetectably synthetic material.

Their sizes are excellent for lightweight fish and a host of freshwater species. They range from 1/16 oz. to 3 oz.

The hand painted eye is enticing enough to allow schooling of fish. This feature allows for more chances of trapping one of the target fish in the water.

Heavy Standard Casting Lures

Heavy Standard Casting Lures are excellent for quite heavy fish specifically, walleye and bass.  While the lightweight lures are used in most circumstances, it was shown that heavy counterparts provide more reliable fishing output.

Moreover, the heavy standard lures are able to catch fish than diamond and light standard casting lures.

Long Casting/Jigging Lures

Perhaps the most popular among the fishing lures are the long, tapered jigging lures. They are perhaps the most commonly used fishing lures among the fishermen in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Just recently, it was found out that the long casting lures work best for catching trout and pike. They were also found to effectively catch stripers and bluefish. They can catch tuna and walleye in a breeze!

Unlike heavy standard lures, this gear won’t produce good fish-catch output up to 180-200 ft under water but be sure to effectively match your lure color, bait and related accessories to maximize performance.

Deadly Diamond Lures

These lures are one of the smallest with sizes ranging from 1/8 to 1oz. They can seamlessly attract attention among fish and could form a school of fish in a minute!

The reason is it lies on its structural surface formation and cut. The top handle is cut like a multi faceted diamond and this causes the reflection of light striking its surface. The diamond lures are best for catching bass fish varieties, crappie and stripers although they work on a small range of fish species.

Learning to trout fish
Image by Sue Waters via Flickr

Trout fishing tips come in quite handy especially when you are a beginner. Some knowledge on the specificity of the trout species would be great, as these fish have a metabolism closely related to water temperature. Their metabolism accelerates with temperature increase. When in cold deeper waters, they show less active and need to eat less.

Moreover, at the beginning of every year those interested in catching trout start to be directed to warmer and warmer waters as trout tend to leave cold deep waters for environments more favorable to spawning. Also, during fall trout start to move towards colder and deeper waters where they would be better off during the cold season. Yet fishermen should not expect them to cover distances very fast. The cycles of moving from one place to another follow the seasons and last for several months.

Also good to know when trout fishing is that these animals live in large groups. They tend to stick together in schools, especially the ones of the same size. Therefore, should you get lucky and get a capture, be sure that there is more trout in the area to catch as long as you do not throw the dead caught fish in the water to scare away the rest of the school.

In addition, trout fishing areas are easy to spot. trout prey on smaller fish, but they are not great hunters due to their slow motion features. They would rather wait patiently and lazily for a victim to come by and unexpectedly get in their way. Sometimes, they feed on injured marine animals even though this kind of food might not be part of their regular menu. Their regular menu consists of frogs craw-fish, worms, minnows insects and so on. For an experienced fisherman, knowledge of the eating habits and the mating peculiarities is no secret.

On the other hand, these fish become prey themselves therefore, in the normal habitat, there should be rocks and alls sorts of sea vegetation to provide them a safe retreat. That is why trout fishing is usually organized in those areas that provide camouflage for both fisherman and fish.

Successful trout fishing may also depend on the type of bait that is chosen by the anglers. Bait should vary according to both the season – spring, summer, autumn or winter – and the spawning cycle of this fish species. Hence, those new to trout fishing should pay attention to more experienced anglers to learn the basic steps.
