How To Make A Dual Crappie Minnow Rig Using Three Way Swivels

If you are not into making your own tackle, or just don’t have the time, these setups can be purchased pre-made at most bait shops, or online at Bass Pro shop or Cabella’s.

Step#1 Get yourself some fire line line 8-20lb test. (note: a 20lb test of fire line has the dia. Of 6lb mono-filament line.)

Step#2 Get yourself some 3 way swivels. The three way swivel allows the crappie minnow to swim freely in a 360deg motion.

Step#3 Get some 1/4oz egg or as they are commonly called “bass sinkers”.

Step#4 Cut 2 pieces of fire line approximately 10” long, tie a crappie hook on one end of each line.

Step#5 Repeat Step 4, but cut 2 pieces 12” long.

Step#6 Open the bail on your fishing reel, make sure you have your fire line going through the eyelets, now pull enough line out so you can work freely while your assembling your crappie live bait rig. Pickup one of the 3 way swivels and tie it to your line that is coming from your fishing reel.

Step#7 You now need to tie one of the 10” crappie hook leaders to the open eyelet that is 90degrees from the top eyelet of the three way swivel you just tied in step 6. If you do this correctly, there should be one open eyelet left, and it should be located directly below the eyelet tied to the line coming out of your fishing reel.

Step#8 Pick up one of the 12” inch pieces of fire line you cut in step 5, then tie one end to the last remaining open eyelet of the first 3 way swivel that is tied directly to the line coming out of your fishing reel. Now pick up your second 3 way swivel and tie the top eyelet to the other end of the 12” line you just tied.

Step#9 Tie one of crappie hook leaders you made in step 4 to the open eye on the 3 way swivel that is 90 degrees clockwise. There should be one open eyelet when you get done, that is pointing strait downward.

Step#10 Pick up the last 12” inch piece of fire line you cut in step 5, then tie one end to the last remaining open eyelet of the second 3 way swivel. Now pick up your 1/4oz Egg or Bass sinker and tie it to the other end of the 12” line.

Step#11Remember we want your crappie live bait rig to look like wounded crappie fishing minnows swimming around in circles, so to complete your setup you need to hook your minnows either in the back or front of the dorsal fin on both crappie hooks.

Look for a dead crappie minnow in your bucket or kill one and hook it to the left or right gill. Next , you need to imitate a wounded or dying minnow so start jigging the dead minnow up and down as you drop your line. This will cause the minnow to flutter as if it were a dying or wounded minnow.

One of the key ingredients to have a successful night fishing trip is picking a good night fishing location. There is one common thread that seems to cross over from species to species of fish such as walleye, crappie, bass and catfish and that is they all cruise the shallows in the twilight looking for a easy bait fish meal. 1.0 How to locate good night spots for walleye, catfish, crappie and bass off of rocky points.

It has been my personal experience to look for night fishing locations for these species that are not on the windward side. Here is a few tips of what to look for. Since I fish from a pontoon boat I look for spots that will hold my anchors and 9 times out of ten I end up fishing off of rocky points on the side opposite where the wind is coming from. One of my favorite spots that I have caught many fish from is of off rocky points that are adjacent to sandy beaches. I like to anchor so my pontoon is just out of the wind. I then cast a couple of poles of my poles toward the shoreline along the break of sand to hard pan or rocky bottom. You will need to do some trial and error to find the “sweet spot location” You will want to set your anchors and drop your underwater fishing lights for the night here. Once you are anchored for the night cast your other poles close to your underwater fishing lights.

2.0 How to locate good night spots for walleye, catfish, crappie and bass adjacent to main waterways.

Another great night fishing location that I have good luck at is in secluded back water areas that have good access to the main waterway. Look for stumps or submerged structure that are on the edge of the backwater close to the access point to the main body of water. These are the locations you will set up for at night. I drop two submerged light sources that are near the submerged structure or stumps but night right on top of them. The submerged lighting will attract plankton and then bait fish in a short period of time. I fish with bobbers and live bait just outside the edge of the underwater fishing lights light beam. Set you’re the depth close to the bottom. You may have to adjust your depth a bit until you start catching fish. I have caught a variety of night feeders using this method that include walleye, crappie, bass and catfish. These spots are perfect if you go night fishing and it is a very windy night.

No other artificial walleye lure will catch walleyes as consistently as a lead head jig designed specifically for the walleye. There are definite, very simple reasons the walleye jig is so universal. It is very important that you adjust your line length to adjust for depth changes. If the bottom get shallower, reel in line and if the bottom gets deeper let more line out. It is very important your line stay vertical at all times, Walleye are very light biters and you need to be able to identify any slight change in line movement if you want to catch fish. When I talk about line movement change, i am referring to any change that is different from the normal line movement that occurs from the bounce off the bottom, this movement will have a identifiable pattern. You are looking for movement goes against the patten. Any subtle change give your line a jerk, it may be a walleye.

Vertical jigging for walleye is much better technique to use in deeper water.I wouldn’t recommend casting for walleye in deeper water if the fish are located on or near the bottom.The reason for this is when you are vertical jigging you can bounce your walleye jig much higher off the bottom and give it more action then casting. Subtle little difference such as more action from the jig bounce off the bottom can be the difference of you catching fish or not.

Probably the key reason vertical jigging in deep water works so well is “the feel” of the walleye hit. When your line is vertical it is much easier to feel a walleye strike.The reason is you are using less line and line stretch does not slight-en the feel of a walleye strike.

Rivers and lakes are excellent places to use vertical jigging for walleye techniques. In a lake , jig vertically while letting the wind push your boat over hidden structure. Make sure if you are in a river that you drift with the current. You may half to slow your drift enough so your walleye fishing jig bounces nicely off the bottom.
